Session 5, Sewing/Quilting

Bias Tape

What is it? – Let’s face it, a lot of sewing is just basic construction.  You start out with a set of tools, some fabric and an intended pattern.  Then you add your own creative expression and that’s what makes it yours.  One of the materials used by sewers in virtually every genre is bias binding tape.  Bias binding tape is simply fabric cut on the bias, or cross grain, and folded to a specific lengthwise dimensional width.  By cutting and folding the fabric on a 45 degree angle from the warp and weft we are able to make a material that can both stretch and bend to any shape we desire.  Instead of folding it around corners or tight curves we can drape it.  Smooth and even.  Bias tape is available commercially so you can buy it as you need it.  That’s good.  However, there is only a limited number of colors (all solids) and widths available.  That’s bad and it can severely restrict your creative potential.  What to do?  Make it yourself.  Now your creative potential is unlimited.  Mix, match or contrast, it’s all up to you.  And it’s easy.  Simply cut your desired fabric into strips the appropriate width, pull then through Clover’s Bias Tape Maker and iron into shape.  Now whether you’re making piping, binding seams, finishing raw edges, or any other project you can add the perfect touch with custom bias binding tape.

What does it do? – Clover’s Bias Tape Maker allows you to select any fabric and manufacture the perfect bias tape to compliment any of your sewn projects.  Creativity without compromise.  Clover’s Bias Tape Maker is available in two styles.

Clover Bias Tape Maker This is our standard bias tape maker.  Simply cut your fabric on the bias in a width twice the finished size desired.  The bias tape maker will fold the fabric evenly as you pull it through.  Iron it into shape as it is pulled from the device and you’re done.  If you want double fold bias tape, just fold that in half and iron again.  Easy and the result is a great looking accent to any project.  Clover Bias Tape Makers are available in 1/4″, 1/2″, 3/4″, 1″, and 2″ sizes.

Clover Fusible Bias Tape Maker – The fusible bias tape maker adds a new dimension to the basic product.  With this unique tool you can easily apply a fusible surface to the back of your bias tape as you make it.  No additional steps required.  Now for Celtic, Meshwork or numerous other applications you can iron and fuse your tape strips into place before sewing.  Clover’s Fusible Bias Tape Maker is available in 1/4″, 3/8″, 1/2″, 3/4″ and 1″ sizes.

How do I share it? – Clover’s Bias Tape Maker is a tool with applications stretching across the entire spectrum of sewing and craft operations.  Edges of hot pads, placemats, bibs, quilts, blankets, pillows, necklines, arm holes, bag straps or just appliqué embellishment, the list is unending. With all of those potential applications it’s easy to make them part of any class.  Also set one out with a partial strip completed.  When your friends see how fast and easy it is to make beautiful bias tape they’ll be looking for ways to use them for their own creative expressions.
